Perception of the World

In the world we do not see things as they are, but we see things the way we want them to be, colored by our minds past impressions.

  1. but isn't the truth to any given individual just what he/she perceives, biased or not? or are you referring to a universal truth when you say "things as they are"...if so, whose perspective is this from? if no one, then does it even exist?

  2. When I say that we don't see things and objects as they are, what I mean is that our mind is not focused on the present moment. Our past experiences rob us from enjoying the present moment as the mind quickly moves from thought to thought into no where by associating and linking based on our past experiences.

For example, if you are outside and look at rose flower. If you are in the present moment, you should completely enjoy the rose, its fragrance, it beautiful color and so on and so forth.

But see how the mind (past impressions and memory) works and takes you for a ride and robs you of the present moment enjoyment.

When you look at the rose, it remind you of the last trip you made to Portland and saw the beautiful rose garden. In the same trip you has gone to Vancover. So you mind wanders to Vancover. You just remembered that some guy cut you off and was very nasty. You were hit by him and had a major accident. You become angry for his carelessness. He was a illegal immigrant and you deplore the immigration laxness and immigration law. You are very upset with the immigration laws and illegal immigrants ............. and so on. Instead of enjoying the rose in the present moment, your past memories have taken you for a ride to anger and hatred.-- You are no longer enjoying the rose.
